I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii with my family when I was a teenager. I loved studying the history, culture, and foods of Hawaii.
I learned to dance the hula when I was attending St. Joseph’s High School in Hilo. I met my husband when we were both on the track team at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
After a trip back to Hawaii in 2003, returning to Connecticut, I decided I wanted to dance the hula again. I had many requests to entertain at private parties.
I dance mostly hapa-haole hula, the type of hula which has entertained tourists in Hawaii since the 1920s. Depending on the occasion, I can do both modern and older hulas, with several different costumes and hula implements. I also spin poi balls. I can demonstrate several different ways to use and tie pareos, sarongs, or lavalavas.
I have so much fun dancing and telling stories! I bring along “facepaint” for children’s parties to paint “tattoos”. And if party-goers wish, they can join the entertainment by learning a few of the simpler hulas. I have a few games I can play with children, as well.
